If you’ve been following along, you know I’ve always been a big believer in taking care of my body — physically, emotionally, and mentally. Not just for me, but so I can show up as the best possible mama for my sweet boy, Philip.
Now that he’s crawling everywhere, pulling himself up, and almost standing (!!!), he’s also hit another big milestone: separation anxiety. He wants me constantly. He needs to be on me, next to me, or in my arms basically 24/7. Otherwise, there are tears.
It’s beautiful and exhausting at the same time. And it made me realize (once again) that if I want to keep up with him and stay patient, present, and strong, I have to take care of myself first.
I’ve been doing acupuncture and reflexology weekly for years now. Acupuncture helps me balance my energy, release tension, and support my overall well-being. Reflexology always feels like a deep reset — it’s amazing how much tension we hold in our feet and how it connects to the rest of the body.
The bonus part? My therapist is happy to have Philip present during my reflexology sessions (not the acupuncture ones, of course — too many hazards with all those pins!). If he doesn’t want to sleep or sit in his pram next to me (which he rarely does 😃), I can hold him in my arms while I get my feet treated. I even try to mirror the reflexology moves on his little feet, and he seems to enjoy it!
But recently, I discovered cupping therapy, and wow… it has been a game changer.
What is Cupping?
Cupping therapy is an ancient technique where special cups are placed on your skin to create suction. It’s used to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, and relaxation. You might have seen the round marks athletes often have on their backs — that’s from cupping!
The Benefits
- Relieves muscle tension and tightness – I carry Philip so much now that my shoulders and upper back feel like they’re made of concrete. After cupping, my shoulders literally dropped two inches. I felt lighter, like I had taken off an invisible backpack
- Improves blood circulation – The suction helps bring fresh blood flow to sore areas, which speeds up healing
- Boosts relaxation and reduces stress – During the session, I felt a deep sense of calm wash over me. As mamas, we’re always “on,” so having even half an hour to fully relax is priceless
- Supports your immune system – by stimulating circulation and lymphatic flow, cupping can help your body clear toxins and stay resilient.
Are There any Downsides?
Cupping can leave circular marks on your skin (mine lasted a few days but didn’t hurt at all). If you have sensitive skin or certain medical conditions, it’s important to check with your doctor first. Some people might also feel a bit sore afterward — kind of like after a deep tissue massage. But for me, the benefits far outweigh any temporary marks or soreness.
Feeling Fresh & Strong
After my session, I felt like a new person. My posture was better, my shoulders had dropped, and I felt so much more energized and light when Philip needed me to scoop him up for the hundredth time that day.
Our babies need so much from us, especially in these clingy phases. But we can’t pour from an empty cup (or hold a 10-kg baby all day with tight shoulders!).
So here’s your reminder, mama: take care of your body. Book that session, stretch, rest, move, breathe — whatever it is that fills your cup. Because when we feel good, we can give our babies the love and patience they deserve.
Have you ever tried cupping, acupuncture, or reflexology? I’d love to hear about your experiences in the comments below!
